Petrographic Services - What makes up my ore?

At VM Geoservices () in Montreal, petrographic characterizations using reflected light ore microscopy and transmitted light microscopy are offered. These are provided as a technical service for exploration and mining clients, prospectors, and as a method of due diligence for investors. The reports will allow you to evaluate the ore and gangue mineralogy and will facilitate an interpretation of the formation process of the ore, i.e. the history of the rock.

Ore and gangue mineral petrography is performed on a state of the art metallurgical polarizing microscope (Olympus BH-2 BHSM) equipped with an 18 Megapixel Canon camera to acquire digital photomicrographs (i.e., photos taken through the research microscope).

The rate is $200 per polished thin section sample, includes the preparation of the thin section and the turnaround time is approximately two months. The report (as a PDF document) includes a full documentation of the minerals and textures and digital photographs according to scientific standards. Some unusual minerals may be challenging to identify using standard microscopy. Any unidentified minerals will be documented and a recommendation will be made how to further proceed with identification. All samples will be returned to the client for future reference. An initial deposit of 40% is required for the first contract from each customer.

Follow-up work can include electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), mineral composition determinations (major and trace elements) by electron microprobe and Laser ablation ICP-MS. These services are carried out by third-party laboratories and are subjected to a rigorous quality control.

Note: Although information obtained from the thin sections is believed to be true and accurate, reports that are to be made public, or that contain any aspect of mineral resource evaluation, require validation by a geologist with a P.Geo. license. This can be arranged upon request, but extra charges apply.
